The week is off to a warm start across most of SA, with SA Weather Service (SAWS) warning of fire danger conditions for western parts of the country on Monday, 12 February.
Widespread showers are expected across SA on Monday, with minimal rainfall expected over drought-stricken parts of the Western and Eastern Capes.
SAWS has issued a watch for severe thunderstorms leading to heavy rainfall on Sunday evening, 11 February. This is expected over the southern Free State and the north-eastern interior of the Eastern Cape.
For Monday, SAWS warns that extremely high fire danger conditions are expected in places over the Northern Cape interior, as well as the West Coast district of the southern peninsula areas of the Cape Metropole.
On Monday, a 60% chance of rain is forecast over central and eastern Eastern Cape, most of the southern and eastern parts of Free State, western and southern KZN, and all of Lesotho.
A 30% chance of scattered showers is expected over the rest of the Eastern Cape, Free State and KZN, Western Cape - except the south coast and Garden Route areas, all of the Northern Cape, most of the western and southern parts of North West and Gauteng, southern and central Mpumalanga, and central Limpopo.
Minimum temperatures on Monday will be cool in the central interior and warm throughout the rest of the country.
The coldest place in SA will be Bethlehem in Free State, dropping to 13°C.
Maximum temperatures will be cool over Mpumalanga's highveld and the Eastern Cape south coast around Port Elizabeth. It will be hot in the Western Cape and over the northern borders of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. It will be warm throughout the rest of SA.
The hottest places in SA will be Vredendal in Western Cape and Phalaborwa in Limpopo, which will both reach a scorching 35°C.
Pretoria in Gauteng will be a hot 30°C, while Johannesburg will reach 28°C. Bloemfontein in the Free State will also be 28°C.
Along the coastal regions, Cape Town in the Western Cape will be a very hot 32°C, while Durban in KZN will reach a warm 27°C. Port Elizabeth in Eastern Cape will be a mild 23°C.
